Cultivation environment
temperature
Vanilla is warm and humid, and the optimum growth temperature is 25-30 °C.
When the temperature is lower than 15 °C for more than 5 days, the growth of the stems is stagnant, and the temperature of 10 °C for one week will cause cold damage.
The flower bud differentiation temperature is 20-22 °C.
Can be planted everywhere in Taiwan
illumination
Vanilla is suitable for growth in a semi-shadow environment, with a shade of 60%-70% in the vegetative growth period and 50% in the production period.
Suitable for illuminance of 15,000-30,000 Lux, more than 50,000 Lux for more than 1 hour, it will cause sunburn.
The single layer uses a 50-70% shade net. The double-layer shading has a 50% fixed shading net on the outer layer and a 40-50% movable shading net on the inner layer, which is adjusted according to the situation.
Soil
Vanilla is a shallow-rooted plant, and the underground roots are mainly distributed in the topsoil about 10 cm, so the soil water retention is very important.
Suitable for slightly acidic (pH 5.5-6.5) soils rich in humus drainage.
Use mixed non-soil medium with good drainage, mainly apply organic fertilizer, supplemented by chemical fertilizer, adjust soil pH value as appropriate.
Moisture
Vanilla is a tropical undergrowth plant that prefers a high-humidity environment, but avoids root water.
The initial irrigation facility uses a ground artificial irrigation method. With the growth of stems and vines, it can be sprayed with automatic fine mist, once in the morning and evening, and combined with foliar fertilization to stimulate the development of air roots and promote nutrient and water absorption.
Plant growth habit
Vanilla is a perennial vine of evergreen vines of the orchid family. Stems have aerial roots and roots, attached to the trunks of other plants in an epiphytic manner.
It is necessary to set the climbing column height to be about 1.5-1.6 m. A horizontal frame can be set between the column and the column for lateral climbing, and the row spacing is 1.8*1.6 m.
